OUR LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD
In the summer of 2007, Joann Cramer was involved in a motorcycle accident that left her with critical injuries including a shattered pelvis, shoulder, leg, and compression fractures in her back.  The drs. let her know that her prognosis was not good.  Just the words Joann needed to hear to inspire her to prove them wrong.  At the time of the accident, years of working for Weight Watchers and exercising had her in the best physical shape of her life, but months of recovery in the hospital soon took a toll on her physically and mentally.  In the following years she found herself dealing with the issues of pain management and depression while trying to recover from her injuries.  Finally drs. told her there was nothing more they could do for her and she was forced to take matters into her own hands.  She began personal training with Michelle in the summer of 2009.  Her goals were very specific - she wanted to reduce bodyfat, add muscle to her very petite 4'11" frame, and learn to walk up stairs again. In the fall, Michelle challenged her to consider doing the St. Louis Half Marathon and just like with everything else in her life she rose to the challenge.  In Dec. she was knocked off track just slightly by being involved in another car accident that broke her "good" shoulder, but instead of giving up she trained for the marathon with her arm in a cast and sling for 2 months.  That's when Michelle started calling her "The Little Engine That Could."  They were on the Katy Trail, rain pouring down, and Michelle would look back at her, determinedly putting one foot in front of the other, talking to herself the whole time.  She doesn't know for sure or not, but in her mind she could hear Joann saying, "I think I can, I think I can!"  In one year she's accomplished a lot.  She's halfway to her goal weight, ran her first half marathon, and ready to join the Bootcamp Program this summer.  All it took was a little bit of determination and a lot of believing you can do anything you set your mind to!
